The Addams Family

Its a truth that there are totally forgetful productions but that, nevertheless, shelter great scores. A basic example of this fact is The Family Addams, a bad movie that contains a score that can be qualified as a masterpiece. In the book of the compact disc, the composer jokes that, "when Barry Sonnenfeld and Scott Rudin (the director and producer, respectively), first asked me to write the score to The Addams Family I was sure of one thing... Danny Elfman must have said no!." Out of jokes, Shaiman achieves a worthy score, doing a limited use of Viz Mizzy's original theme from the old television series (in fact, it only appears three times in the cd). The unforgettable main theme (a passionate waltz), it is one of many culminating moments of a great score, where there is space for exciting swords fights, comical themes, tension and a love theme that probably is the most beautiful of all those that the author has composed in all his career. Its included the complete version of the enterteining tune "Mamushka", performed by Raul Julia and Christopher Lloyd, with music from Shaiman and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and that contains parts of “Merrily We Roll Along " by Eddie Cantor, Charlie Tobias and Murray Mencher. Marc Shaiman himself appears in the movie, where he plays the role of a conductor, cameo that you can see in the movie trailer. An out of print CD and a must have.

Penetrating into this brilliant work we can catalogue the music of the movie into the following form:

1. A waltz as Marc Shaiman's main theme, that is used in the movie more than Viz Mizzy's one. The versions of the theme are superb, all brilliant.
2. "Thing” theme. Another good theme composed for the movie, also appears in many variants, being prominent the pizzicato one or another in the "swing" sound that appears when "Thing" gets a job.
3. A third theme is a kind of "tango".
4. Vibrant themes for sword fights.
5. A love theme, one of the most beautiful tunes in the composers whole work, in a certain way its brilliance is not widely shown on screen. A pity.
6. A musical number, "Mamushka", absolutely great and one of the most loved tunes of his career.
7. A beautiful and brief "happy" tune for the hapy ending, in a slyle closed to a lullaby.
8. Incidental music: they is Shaiman's original score of not recognizable melody and where stands out a tune for a pursuit that reminds moments of "musical madness" included in the final track of Misery.
9. Source music: for the school show, opera music and other that sounds in the car radio, etc.
10. Others themes from other composers, properly used in the movie, as Viz Mizzy´s one, "Playmates" or "The Mooche".
11. Forgetful music: Hammer's tunes, as the horrifying song "The Addams Groove" from the final credits.
