The Addams Family Values

A sequel that is better than the previous movie, and where the composer, even using variants of the previous themes, is able to offer a new and fresh score. Its something that also happens with the sequel City Slickers II, The Legend of Curly's Gold. The box office worked worse for this movie than with the previous one, something unjust. The composer keeps in mind better memories of his step along this sequel, though also he considers it to be a special challenge, since the producers used material from the first score as temp track. Shaiman had to face himself to go beyond and to achieve new material with which to beat himself, obtaining brilliant results and composing two songs, with the lyrics from Paul Rudnick and Scott Wittman.
Possibly the star track of the compact disc is "The Tango", whose composition was born from an offer from Scott Rudin (producer), consistent in assembling in a tango both themes from Morticia and the Addams Family one. There is a brief appearance of the beautiful love them from the first movie, in a cd release that complements wonderfull with the previous one. Artie Kane directed the orchestra, and the orchestrations where task for Hummie Mann, Jeff Atmajian, Brad Dechter and Michael Starobin.

As happens in the first movie, recognizable (and great) melodies, occupy first place over a use of incidental music, though the score contains this kind of music. There are different the new themes that coexist with excellent variations of the old ones:

1. A lullaby (not from Shaiman), as perfect tune for the new born.
2. A entertaining theme for the rivalry between the brothers and the baby, whom they want to eliminate.
3. A theme for Debbie, the wicked babysitter.
4. New love theme, perfect for Fester madness to Debbie. A beautiful theme.
5. New songs for the camp musical play. Two: "Camp Chippewa Song" and "Eat Us".
6. An excellent tango (track: "The Big Date").
7. Music for Morticia and Gomez´s dance, in a compendium of styles and variations, including instruments as castanets, mariachi trumpets and violin (Excellent track: "Tango").
8. Theme for Wednesday and his relationship to nerd Joel, excellent in a sentimental touch.
9. Themes for Fester and Debbie´s relationship, in several excellent tracks with new music, from the honeymoon and the evolution of the relationship towards the disaster.
10. Incidental tunes that can be located along the score, with special importance in the resolution of the plot.

The cd release is enjoyable, from start to finish, and there is no problem that Shaiman re-uses his previous tunes. Among the great tracks from the cd, it is necessary to emphasize the incredible level of "The Big Date", "Tango" or "Debbies Big Scene". A musically exceptional sequel.
